A Cup and a Plate

A Cup and a Plate

Once upon a time, in a small kitchen, there lived a white Cup and a round Plate. They were best friends and lived in the same wooden cupboard. Every morning, the lady of the house took them out for breakfast.

“Good morning, Plate!” said Cup one day.

“Good morning, Cup!” said Plate. “You look very tired today. Did you dream of tea again?”

Cup laughed. “No, but I think you are getting fatter with all the food you hold!”

Plate gasped. “Excuse me? I’m strong! I can carry rice, eggs, and toast at the same time. What can you do? Just hold tea or coffee?”

“Oh really?” Cup replied. “At least I don’t have crumbs all over me!”

They both laughed and clinked gently.

Sometimes, they fought. One morning, Cup was not happy.

“You pushed me last night!” said Cup.

“No, I didn’t!” said Plate.

“Yes, you did. I fell behind the salt jar.”

“That was the spoon’s fault, not mine!” Plate shouted.

“You always blame someone else!”

They turned away from each other. The cupboard felt cold and quiet.

The next morning, the lady took out Plate but not Cup.

“Oh no,” Plate whispered. “Where is Cup?”

He looked around and saw Cup still in the cupboard, looking sad.

That evening, when they were back inside, Plate rolled close and said, “I missed you today.”

Cup smiled. “I missed you too. I’m sorry.”

“Me too,” said Plate. “Let’s not fight again.”

“Deal,” said Cup.

After that, they made more jokes. One afternoon, Cup said, “Your surface is so flat, even pancakes take a nap on you!”

Plate giggled. “And your handle looks like a baby’s ear!”

Cup laughed so hard he almost spilled his tea.

One day, a new glass arrived. It was tall and shiny.

Cup said, “Hello! I’m Cup. And this is my best friend Plate.”

The glass looked proud. “Nice to meet you. I’m used for juice, not tea.”

Plate whispered to Cup, “He thinks he’s better because he’s taller.”

Cup replied, “Well, we are funnier!”

That night, Plate told a joke.

“What did the spoon say to the fork?”

“What?” Cup asked.

“Stop poking around!”

Cup laughed so loudly the whole cupboard shook.

The next morning, the lady picked up the new glass and it slipped—CRASH!

“Oh no!” shouted Cup.

“Poor glass,” said Plate. “He wasn’t here for long.”

Cup said, “Maybe he wasn’t made for jokes like us.”

From that day, Cup and Plate promised to always laugh, even on sad days.

Sometimes they still had small fights.

“You’re taking up too much space!” Cup would say.

“Well, maybe you need a smaller handle!” Plate would answer.

But they always made up before bedtime.

At night, when the kitchen was quiet, they whispered funny stories and silly dreams.

“We are not just dishes,” Cup said once.

“We are best friends forever,” Plate replied.

And they both smiled in the dark cupboard, happy to have each other.

The end.
